VfB Stuttgart defeated 1. FC Köln 4-1 at home in the Mercedes-Benz Arena, quickly putting their opening day loss to Bayern Munich behind them. The victory propels VfB to 7th place in the current Bundesliga table with three points from two matches.
Sebastian Hoeneß's team showed a marked improvement from the defeat in Munich and controlled large portions of the match. With five goals scored and six conceded so far this season, their goal difference remains negative.
Stuttgart took an early lead and gave their opponents little room to maneuver. The attack was effective and converted chances clinically. The defense, which had struggled the previous week, looked much more secure. This win provides confidence for the upcoming tasks, which include an away fixture against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on September 12th, as seen in the fixtures list.
In stoppage time of the match, 19-year-old Yanik Spalt celebrated his first competitive appearance for VfB Stuttgart's senior team. The young midfielder was substituted on in the 92nd minute for a brief cameo. The timing is particularly notable: Spalt made his debut just one day after his 19th birthday. Prior to this, he had been on the bench for the first time with the professional squad. His debut is a significant step in his development and highlights the pathway for the club's talents.
Despite the win, VfB continues to deal with a lengthy injury list. Currently, six players are sidelined and unavailable. The absentees include Dan Zagadou, Lorenz Assignon, Luca Jaquez, Nikolas Nartey, Tiago Tomás, and Dennis Seimen. The current status of the injured players is documented on our injuries page. This situation continues to test the squad's depth, making the clear victory against Köln all the more impressive.
The next challenge for VfB Stuttgart awaits this coming weekend. On Friday, September 12th, 2026, they travel for an away match against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. Hoffenheim currently sit in 13th place. For VfB, this presents an opportunity to continue their positive momentum and secure their first away points of the season. All information on the squad and possible line-ups can be found in the squad section.
