VfB Stuttgart suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat away to Bayern Munich on the opening day of the Bundesliga season. The hosts dominated from the outset, leaving the Swabian visitors with few opportunities.
Bayern took an early lead and built on their superiority as the match progressed. The new faces in the record champions' squad made a particular impact. Nathaniel Brown, signed for €50 million from Eintracht Frankfurt, and the €55 million arrival Ismail Saibari from PSV Eindhoven integrated seamlessly. Saibari provided two assists after coming on as a substitute, while Brown was also dangerous. "Nene and Isi, top, top players who really help us. They did super today," enthused Bayern midfielder Aleksandar Pavlovic after the match.
Stuttgart Keeper Prevents Worse
Despite the clear loss, there was a positive note for VfB: their goalkeeper put in a strong performance, making several saves to prevent an even heavier defeat. In the 38th minute, he rescued his team after a good combination between Alphonso Davies and Nathaniel Brown. For the Stuttgart defence, however, it was a long evening against a superior Bayern attack that, according to Joshua Kimmich, hadn't even reached its limit. "I believe we weren't at our limit in either game," said the Germany international, also referencing the prior Supercup win.
The defeat is a setback for VfB at the start of the season. Sebastian Hoeneß's team must now quickly learn the lessons from this match before the next matchday arrives. For VfB, the task is to stabilise their defensive work and collect points in upcoming home games. The next opportunity comes as early as next weekend.
Pavlovic left no doubt about Munich's ambitions after the victory. "We're up for more, up for more goals, up for more wins," said the 22-year-old. For VfB Stuttgart, analysing this heavy defeat is the first major task of the new campaign. The team leaves Munich with zero points and must now prepare for the home game to move up the table quickly. The current standings show VfB in a lower position after this first matchday.
