VfB Stuttgart faces a potential review of its ownership structure. Sports car manufacturer Porsche, which has held a 10.4 percent stake in VfB Stuttgart AG since 2024, continuously reviews its investment portfolio as a matter of principle.

“Porsche has held 10.4 percent of VfB shares since 2024. Around 40 million euros flowed to the club for the entry at that time,” the company stated. In a further comment, it said: “Porsche continuously reviews its investment portfolio as a matter of principle.”

Volkswagen Crisis Background

The review takes place against the backdrop of a comprehensive financial crisis at its parent company Volkswagen. The VW supervisory board has approved a rescue plan in which investments in football clubs are “generally not part of the 2030 target image.” This realignment also affects FC Bayern Munich, in which VW holds an indirect stake via Audi. The Audi contract with Bayern runs until 2029, and an extension is considered unlikely.

For VfB, the Porsche stake is of central importance. In addition to the 40 million euros for the share purchase, the sponsorship package includes a further 60 million euros. This flows into areas including youth development and secures the arena naming rights via the former MHP subsidiary. A change to these financial streams could significantly impact the club in the medium term.

VfB Stuttgart has had a mixed start to the season and sits in 14th place in the Bundesliga with three points from three games. The last five competitive matches have yielded three wins and two defeats. The team most recently lost 2-1 away to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim on September 12, with Maximilian Mittelstädt scoring the consolation goal.

The next task is the home match on September 19 against current second-placed side Borussia Dortmund. The current table and detailed team statistics are available under standings and stats.
