VfB Stuttgart are set to keep Angelo Stiller after his release clause expired on Wednesday. The 25-year-old midfielder will remain with the team, with the clause only reactivating next summer, according to reports in the „Sport Bild“. Manager Sebastian Hoeneß has repeatedly called Stiller an indispensable starter.

What happened?

Stiller’s contract included a release clause of €36.5 million, which expired at midnight on 15 July. Manchester United had been linked with a move for the Germany international, but Stuttgart managed to retain his services. The club even had the option to buy out the clause for €3.5 million if a bid materialized.

Why it matters for VfB Stuttgart

Stiller is a key figure in Stuttgart’s midfield under Hoeneß, and his retention boosts the team’s stability ahead of the new Bundesliga campaign. The Swabians currently sit fourth with 62 points from 34 games - 27 points behind leaders Bayern Munich. Goals this season: 71 scored, 49 conceded (+22 goal difference).

What’s next?

Stuttgart now turn their focus to pre-season training as fans await Stiller’s return. Their next fixture is a home clash against Paris FC on 1 August. Recent form: 1W-2D-2L (LLDDW), with back-to-back defeats. Last result: Bayern Munich 3-0 VfB Stuttgart (2026-05-23).
