Dennis Seimen marked an emotional Bundesliga debut for VfB Stuttgart with a 2-0 win at SC Paderborn. The 20-year-old goalkeeper kept a clean sheet and was moved to tears at the final whistle, embraced by head coach Sebastian Hoeneß.
The victory in Paderborn lifts Stuttgart to 11th place in the table, now on six points from five matches. It extends the team's positive recent trend after the international break, making it three consecutive Bundesliga wins. This current form, with eight goals scored and just one conceded in the last three games, is detailed in our stats section. Stuttgart had begun the season with just one win from their opening four games.
The Match
Jeff Chabot put Stuttgart ahead in the 25th minute with a header from an Atakan Stiller cross. Paderborn created a big chance before the break through Raphael Obermaier, but Seimen made the save. The visitors remained dangerous in the second half but only sealed the win late on. Stiller was again the provider, setting up Chris Führich for the second goal in the 83rd minute. Stuttgart could have added to their lead earlier, but Jamie Leweling hit the post in the 30th minute.
The Reaction
“A few tears flowed after the match,” admitted Seimen. The appearance in Paderborn was particularly poignant for the young keeper, who was on loan at the club last season and helped them secure promotion in the relegation play-off against Wolfsburg. “That I get to celebrate my Bundesliga debut in Paderborn is a story only football can write,” he said. Coach Hoeneß praised his player: “He was very emotional. I thought it was beautiful to see how much a game like this means to a young player.”
Seimen missed the start of the season through injury, with Fabian Bredlow taking his place in goal. He used the three-week international break to regain full fitness. Before kick-off, he was greeted with applause from the Paderborn supporters.
VfB now face a busy schedule. A Champions League away game at Slovan Bratislava awaits on Wednesday. Next Saturday brings a Bundesliga away fixture at league neighbours Hamburger SV, who currently sit 12th. The team travels with growing confidence, having scored eight goals and conceded just one in their last three league matches.
