VfB Stuttgart secured their second win from two matches in this season's Champions League. A 3-1 (1-0) victory away at ŠK Slovan Bratislava on Wednesday evening at the Národný Futbalový Štadión saw Sebastian Hoeneß's side again demonstrate their quality in Europe's premier competition.
The visitors took the lead in the 29th minute through Deniz Undav, who finished from an Angelo Stiller assist. After the break, a Sandro Cruz own goal in the 64th minute doubled the advantage before Ermedin Demirović sealed the result in the final minute following a pass from Lorenz Assignon. Referee Irfan Peljto got the match underway at 9 pm.
Hoeneß with momentum
Manager Sebastian Hoeneß had sent his team into the fixture with confidence. "Sebastian Hoeneß and his team are going into the Champions League match with momentum," the coach said beforehand. That momentum was clearly felt. Following the 3-1 win in their opener against Viking Stavanger and now a fourth win in their last five Champions League outings, the mood in the squad is excellent. The team, currently 11th in the Bundesliga with six points from five games in the standings, can now carry this momentum forward.
The team had to do without Maximilian Mittelstädt, who suffered a cut to his right heel in the 2-0 win over Paderborn. Jeff Chabot travelled with the squad despite minor muscular discomfort from the weekend and was available.
Perfect start and looking ahead
With this success, Stuttgart continues its positive run and remains unbeaten in the new Champions League league phase. The next assignment comes on Saturday with an away fixture at league neighbours Hamburger SV. All upcoming fixtures are listed on our fixtures page.
The win in Bratislava was the fourth meeting between the two clubs including qualifiers, and VfB Stuttgart remained unbeaten in all encounters. The last meeting in the main round of a European competition was in the 2024/25 season, also a 3-1 away win for Stuttgart. After this clear victory, the squad now focuses fully on returning to Bundesliga action.
